So a conversation I had last night with a few friends made me realize that we really cannot afford to just idly stand by and watch the world unfold in the same stratified manner that it has in the past. We have a voice as a generation and I believe we view things in a much different way than how they currently are. Gay rights is just one thing that we can change, and it’s one change I really want to be a part of. I want to tell my children that at one point me and their dad weren’t allowed to get married and have them laugh at how ridiculous it sounds to them. We need to stop this inequality before our voice is lost in the same stagnant cloud of indecision as the baby boomers’. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of worrying about what’s going to happen when my boyfriend or I get sick and has to be hospitalized or wonder if anyone will be willing to rent out an apartment to a gay couple. At some point we need to realize that gay, straight, bi, trans people are people and there is no reason they shouldn’t all be seen in the same light. Straight people making the rules for gay marriage is like men making the rules for abortion, it just doesn’t make sense! I vow to always help my community because at the moment that’s what we are: a separate but unequal minority that has to stick together. If you are straight and reading this think about the following: Did segregation get abolished because of the singular efforts of the minority… NO! Stop being the silent majority and take action for what you know and feel is right! It takes the support of the strongest voices to make change a reality. Join in the efforts to bring about equality in this country and end the hypocrisy of the “land of the free and home of the brave”.
